Cam Ward let the football world know who he is with the Miami Hurricanes this season. The signal-caller became a Heisman finalist after a phenomenal campaign with the school, and now his draft stock has skyrocketed. Ward is now preparing to be a potential top five draft pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

College Career Summary:
Cam Ward started his college career in 2020 with Incarnate Word, playing in six games and playing a 3-3 record. He threw 24 touchdowns compared to only four interceptions that season, and this allowed him to surge that momentum into 2021. He remained with the same team and went 10-3 this go around, throwing 47 touchdowns compared to 10 interceptions while adding 4,648 passing yards. Thanks to his performance, he had some options moving forward, opting to switch over to Washington State. Despite playing 13 games, he was 7-6, threw 3,231 yards, 23 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. It was a noticeable step-down, and that continued in the 2023 season, also spent with Washington State. He was an even worse 5-7 this season, though he improved a small bit statistically by throwing for 3,735 yards, 25 touchdowns, and only seven interceptions. He transferred again, this time going to Miami in 2024. And this was when everything changed for him. Ward immediately had a monstrous season with the Hurricanes. Despite having a few hiccups throughout the year, he remained a Heisman finalist and catapulted his draft stock in the process.

High Pressure Situations/Clutch Gene:
Cam Ward is interesting when it comes to his clutch gene. For the most part, he is recognized as someone who consistently rises to the occasion when the game is on the line. He’s somebody that wants the ball in his hands and you can trust that he’ll make the most of the opportunity. However, he’s also had a few disastrous performances in games that he was supposed to win, which can raise some concerns there. In high-pressure games, we watched him complete 12 of 19 passes for 190 yards and three touchdowns without an interception in the 2024 Pot Tarts Bowl, but this was the aforementioned game when he pulled himself. Earlier in the same season, Ward and Miami found themselves down by 25 points against California, fighting their way back and winning 39-38 at the end of it. It wasn’t a big-time game, but it was a big-time comeback led by Ward. Luckily, the positives seem to outweigh the negatives when it comes to his ability to rise to the occasion. When the game is on the line, it certainly appears that Ward is somebody that you can rely on. There is a reason why people have stated that Ward has a knack for the dramatic.
NFL Projection And Fantasy Relevance:
Cam Ward is projected to be the second-best quarterback in the class, though he can very easily be considered the first as well. He is right there alongside Shedeur Sanders in these projections, and this gives Ward the opportunity to get drafted unbelievably high. Given how the first five picks in the NFL Draft are slated to go, there is a high likelihood that we see Ward and Sanders both get drafted there. Ward has a ceiling of being the number one overall pick, and the farthest I see him dropping is right outside of the top 10. Many will say that this projection is because the quarterback class this year isn’t entirely deep, though that shouldn’t take away what Ward was able to do with the Hurricanes this season. There’s genuine NFL potential for him to be the face of a franchise if he continues to develop. Looking at this from a fantasy perspective, it looks like he’s going to be a player to keep an eye on. He might be able to use his legs, but he isn’t someone who looks to make use of them every chance he can get. I don’t see the same type of consistent rushing usage that we see from Lamar Jackson or even Jayden Daniels. However, he does have a unique ability to rack up touchdowns quickly. Put him on a team that might find themselves losing more often than not, and Ward could have a big fantasy football campaign as a rookie. I see him landing with the Tennessee Titans with that top pick, but anywhere in the top three makes sense.
Teams are going to be questioning what happened during that Pop-Tarts Bowl game where he just exited the match, but there is no denying the talent he has. Many scouts consider there to be a significant quarterback drop-off when looking at Ward and Sanders compared to the rest of the incoming class. This is going to push quarterback-needy teams to pull the trigger on Ward or Sanders much earlier than perhaps they would in other years. I’d like to see Cam Ward improve upon his consistency a small bit, after a couple of random down performances throughout this past season. Ultimately though, he’s got an excellent arm, great skills when it comes to improvising broken-down plays, can use his legs when the opportunity presents itself, and routinely makes things interesting when the game goes down to the wire with his composure.
